Course Description

This course is specially designed for medical and health professions educators, leaders and administrative staff who are involved in developing, designing, decision making or providing support to operationalise student/resident assessment.


Learners will gain a more in-depth understanding of how to develop an assessment item, assemble a valid, reliable fair exam, set standards in setting pass/fail standards and best practices in conducting a post-hoc analysis of exam performance. This course will be led by local and overseas experienced medical educationalists and psychometricians who will share their knowledge and experiences through engaging mini-presentations and cases.


By the end of the workshop, participants should be able to:

  • Apply the basic principles of assessment in developing an assessment item
  • Develop a valid, reliable and fair assessment
  • Compare and contrast different types of assessments
  • Set pass/fail standard using contemporary best evidence standard-setting methods in various context and carry out exam post-hoc analysis
  • Able to analyse exam performance
